Center for P-16 initiatives expands efforts in Central Texas

The Center for P-16 Initiatives at Texas State University-San Marcos is expanding its reach to include two additional school districts, Navarro ISD and Hays CISD, and one charter school to its existing service to the SMCISD.

The center’s 43 G-Force Mentors will be on-site at 10 locations in a mentorship and tutoring capacity.

The mentors will be stationed at San Marcos High School, Phoenix Academy, Lehman High School, Lockhart High School, Seguin High School, Navarro High School, Hays High School, Katherine Anne Porter Charter School, the San Marcos Public Library and the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce.

Along with the G-Force Mentorship program, the center is home to Generation Texas. Generation Texas is a statewide, grassroots movement committed to ensuring that the next generation of young Texans is both college-minded and career-ready.

“The expansion is in response to the need in Central Texas to provide assistance for families in navigating access to postsecondary education,” said Liz, Castaneda grant coordinator for the Center for P-16 Initiatives. “We are happy to fill the role.”

The Center for P-16 Initiatives, in collaboration with SOAR (Seeking Opportunities Achieving Results) is committed to early childhood scholastic readiness, college access and work development, and engaging the community in a collective mission to decrease drop-out rates and increase college recruitment and retention. The center provides assistance with FAFSA and Apply Texas applications, along with resume writing, job search, and general mentorship service. The Center for P-16 Initiatives is under the direction of Michelle Hamilton.
