Texas State hosts Texas Independent Film Network screening of ‘Mars’

The Texas Independent Film Network (TIFN) will present a special screening of MARS, a romantic comedy that follows three astronauts as they visit the red planet, Nov. 16 on the Texas State University-San Marcos campus.

The screening will be held in room 206 of the Theatre Center on campus with a 7 p.m. start. Admission is free and open to the general public.

Director Geoff Marslett depicts the film in a graphic novel style, using an animation technique that was specifically developed for the film. Written and directed with a Southwestern flair, Marslett's eccentric feature debut features an indie-cool cast of supporting talent, including Giant Sand singer-songwriter Howe Gelb, comic book artist and rock-n-roller James Kochalka, Cynthia Watros (Lost), Liza Weil (Gilmore Girls), plus iconoclastic Texas humorist-musician-politico Kinky Friedman as the President of the United States and ultimately presents an exploration of exploration. Why do we want to know what is out there? How do we react to what we find? Is it actually that important? And where does love fit into the whole thing?

TIFN was founded by Louis Black and Ryan Long. Black is best known as a co-founder of both SXSW and the Austin Chronicle, while Long is the film programs manager with the Austin Film Society, as well as the director of Austin’s premiere micro-cinema, Screen Door Film.
