Juilliard returns to Texas State for Common Experience performance

Performers from the Juilliard School will perform Sustaining the Moment: Reflections of Art and Nature March 10 as part of the Common Experience program at Texas State University-San Marcos.

The event will be at 7:30 p.m. in Evans Auditorium on campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

This year’s performance will feature Charles Ives’ Concord Sonata performed by pianist and Juilliard faculty member Aaron Wunsch, Alban Berg’s Lyric Suite played by the Afiara String Quartet, and Frederic Rzewski's To the Earth featuring percussionist Michael Truesdell. In addition, the world premiere of Wayne Oquin’s Flute Concerto commissioned by Texas State’s Common Experience specifically for this performance will feature soloist Emi Ferguson. Oquin is a Juilliard faculty member and Texas State Distinguished Alumnus.

Texas State and Juilliard will join forces on Oquin’s Watersong for solo violin, harp, piano, percussion and string orchestra. The violin soloist is Yo-Yo Fann. Over this music will be a dance solo choreographed by Yara Travieso.

All performances are focused on this year’s Common Experience theme, Sustainability.

The Juilliard School, located in New York City’s Lincoln Center, includes among its alumni Wynton Marsalis, Jessye Norman, Itzhak Perlman, Stephen Sondheim, and Robin Williams. Many of the Juilliard students and alumni who will appear here are performing professionally in New York and throughout the country.
