Texas State to lead statewide workforce grant

The Health Information Management Department at Texas State University-San Marcos has been awarded a Wagner-Peyser grant by Governor Rick Perry’s office.

The Texas Health Information Technology (HIT) Workforce Development project, backed by the Texas Workforce Commission, is tasked with performing a statewide workforce needs and educational program assessment to develop a long-term plan for Texas. The Texas economy stands to save as much as $14.2 billion annually if it can effectively implement and maintain upgraded health information infrastructures. Texas employer, provider, consultant and vendor company needs for well-trained HIT professionals to achieve these savings are expected to number in the thousands.

The project will be holding focus groups in Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Lubbock, El Paso, Brownsville, College Station and the Dallas-Fort Worth area between April and Aug. of this year. Information gathered from the groups will provide the basis for the HIT workforce needs survey.
