Computer science awarded grant by Department of Defense

Texas State University-San Marcos Department of Computer Science has been awarded one of 33 grants by the Department of Defense Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Institutions Research and Educational Program.

The funding from the grant will go toward research on large-scale partial-duplicate image retrieval system and its applications. The U.S Army Research Office (ARO) will fund the three-year $488,576 grant to support the research being conducted. The principal investigator for the research proposal is Yijuan Lu, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Lu said the research proposed aims to develop a highly accurate, scalable, and real-time large-scale partial-duplicate image retrieval system for a100 million-scale image database or larger. The goal of the project is to further advance research in this area in order to produce many promising and effective applications in image forensics, video surveillance, image encyclopedia and mobile to visual searches such as landmark and product searches.

The Department of Defense selects HBCUs and Minority Institutions to award the prestigious grants to each year because the schools offer a talented workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics that can benefit the research and education efforts of the Department and the nation. ARO will be making all 33 of the grants totaling $17.3 million to minority institutions as part of the fiscal year 2011.
