Aquarena Center and the River Systems Institute at Texas State University-San Marcos will host the 5th Annual Aquarena Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 30.
The event will run from 12-6 p.m. at Aquarena.
Spotlighting the theme of “Sustainability,” Aquarena’s Earth Day Celebration will be the final event for Texas State’s 2011 Common Experience. The concept of “Sustainability” has grown in recent years in recognition of human interaction with the planet, and the impacts that interaction has had on the environment. This year’s festival will highlight the importance of the community to come together to make responsible choices and incorporate practices that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
More than 55 regional informational booths will be set up on the shores of the environmentally sensitive Spring Lake. Activities designed to help citizens become better stewards of the Earth will run throughout the day. Topics cover food, art, gardening, water, science, ecology, politics, transportation, recycling, energy and more. Activities include:
- Live Music from the Billye Bright Trio, Ashleigh Stone and Jack Higgenbotham
- A dedication ceremony with community leaders at 2 p.m. followed by a blessing of the springs
- A guided hike of the Spring Lake Preserve by the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance
- Local youth choir, folkloric and mariachi performances
- Recycling and green building displays
- Recycled art lab for children
The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Texas State’s Common Experience, Department of Geography and Environmental Service Committee, the City of San Marcos, the Hill Country Alliance, the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority and 1836 Inc. Free bus rides and parking will be available in the Strahan Coliseum parking lot.
