Stan Carpenter named Dean of Education at Texas State

Stan Carpenter has been named dean of the College of Education at Texas State University-San Marcos.

Carpenter has been serving as interim dean of the college since 2010, and he will assume his new position immediately.

Texas State President Denise Trauth said, “Dr. Carpenter has provided exceptional leadership throughout his years at Texas State, including his most recent service as Interim Dean.  Our College of Education has an extraordinary tradition of providing excellent teachers and other educational leaders for the State of Texas, and I look forward to working with Dean Carpenter as we build on that record.”

Carpenter came to Texas State as chair of what is now the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education and School Psychology in 2003, following administrative assignments in student affairs and development and nearly 19 years on the faculty of Texas A&M University.

From 1987 to 1997, he also served as the executive director of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. He had a variety of program coordination duties at Texas A&M, including founding and running a nationally known master’s degree program in Student Affairs Administration.

A widely respected teacher and scholar, Carpenter has won major awards in teaching, research and service. He has served as chair of the prestigious Senior Scholars group in the American College Personnel Association and founded the Faculty Fellows program of the National Association for Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

He has given more than 150 conference and invited presentations and is the author or co-author of more than 95 journal articles, book chapters and other professional publications and reports, mostly focusing on professionalism, leadership and professional development in student affairs. In 2010, he was named a Pillar of the Profession by NASPA.

Carpenter was active in the Faculty Senate at Texas A&M, serving on the Executive Committee for three years. At Texas State, he has been active on the Council of Chairs, including a term as chair in 2008-09. He served on the Quality Enhancement Plan Committee that received the Quality Team award for 2010. He serves on the Steering Committee for the Strengthening Families grant and the Committee for Interdisciplinary Research grants.

Carpenter holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Tarleton State University, a master’s degree in student personnel and guidance from Texas A&M University-Commerce and a doctorate in counseling and student personnel services with a concentration in higher education administration from the University of Georgia.
