The Texas State University-San Marcos School of Music will host acclaimed musician Rob Kapilow for a lecture Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the LBJ Student Center Teaching Theatre and for a concert Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. in Evans Auditorium.

Kapilow’s lecture, titled “Listen for the hmmm…” will feature the artist, with piano on hand, and Cheryl Parrish, senior lecturer in the School of Music, in a guest spot. The lecture will be free and open to the public.

The concert will have Kapilow guest conducting the Texas State Symphony Orchestra in performing “Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony,” and will be styled after Kapilow’s Lincoln Center lecture series, “What Makes it Great?” Along with the performances, Kapilow will provide commentary on the compositional features of the pieces to be played. Tickets will be $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.

Event organizer Cynthia Gonzales, associate professor in the School of Music, said that Kapilow’s performances are highly entertaining and appeal to a broad range of interests.

“Anyone who’s a creative thinker will enjoy this,” Gonzales said of Kapilow’s upcoming lecture and concert. “He is so engaging and communicates so effectively about music.”

Kapilow performs around the country as a lecturer, composer and conductor. The only person to have his own lecture series at the Lincoln Center in New York, Kapilow is a distinguished musician and educator who has created a number of interactive programs that expose audiences to various aspects of classical music.

Event cosponsors include the University Lecture Series, the College of Fine Arts and Communication and the Texas State Symphony Orchestra.
