Psi Chi student chapter earns 'model chapter' honors

The Texas State University-San Marcos student chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, has been named a model chapter by the international organization.

The chapter, which inducts 30-40 new members each semester, was honored for its efficient organizational operation and for its academic programming and charitable service.

In addition to providing study skills training, career exploration, and preparation for taking the Graduate Record Exam, the chapter provides outreach to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council and the Austin State Hospital and participates in local charity events such as breast cancer awareness walks, the Texas Department of Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway program and Farmer Fred’s Fall Festival.

The chapter also interacts with visiting high school students, hosts movie nights and discussions for the entire campus, and supports departmental mixers to introduce faculty and students at the beginning of each semester.

Membership in Psi Chi is open to students who meet the criteria:

• Psychology major or minor
• minimum of 9 credit hours in Psychology completed
• minimum of 3.0 GPA in all Psychology coursework
• minimum of 3.0 oversll GPA, and
• overall GPA that places the student in the top 35 percent of the class - sophomore, junior or senior
