Chancellor McCall to keynote summer commencement

 Brian McCall, chancellor of the Texas State University System, will deliver the keynote address at one of three commencement ceremonies to be held Friday, Aug. 13, at Texas State University-San Marcos.

 

McCall will address degree candidates from the Texas State colleges of Education, Fine Arts and Communication and Health Professions at a ceremony to be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Strahan Coliseum on campus.

 

Candidates from the colleges of Science and Liberal Arts and the University College are scheduled to attend a ceremony at Strahan Coliseum at 2 p.m. Friday.

 

Candidates from the McCoy College of Business Administration and the College of Applied Arts will attend the 6 p.m. ceremony Friday in Strahan Coliseum.

 

Texas State President Denise Trauth will offer remarks at the 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. ceremonies.

 

Approximately 1,700 students are candidates for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees this summer at Texas State.

 

McCall holds a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University, a master’s degree from SMU and a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Dallas. He spent a year as a visiting post-graduate student at Oxford.

 

McCall previously served in the Texas House of Representatives, first elected in 1991 to represent the areas of North Dallas, Frisco, Allen and Plano. As a Representative, he served as Chairman of the House Calendars Committee and as a member of the Higher Education Committee. Texas Monthly magazine named McCall one of the “10 Best” legislators for the 2009 legislative session.

 

A long-time civic and community volunteer, McCall is founder and Chairman of the Board of The Empowerment Project, a non-profit organization which has sent more than $10 million worth of math and science books to disadvantaged schools in the Republic of South Africa, and helped construct a library in Vietnam through the Libraries of Love organization. The Empowerment Project also raised more than $350,000 to provide direct support for the medical needs of children in North Texas.

 

As chancellor of the TSUS, McCall oversees the oldest and third-largest university system in Texas, comprising eight universities and colleges with more than 72,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff.
