Schwayze, featuring Cisco Adler, to headline this year's Riverfest

Shwayze, featuring Cisco Adler, will headline Riverfest, the annual, free concert for students and the community, April 22 in Sewell Park at Texas State University-San Marcos.

Riverfest will be 4-10 p.m., and is sponsored by the Student Association for Campus Activities (SACA) at Texas State.

The concert will open with local bands Zlam Dunk and The Couch, with Shwayze closing out the evening. Zlam Dunk was winner of the SACA Battle of the Bands in the fall 2009 semester, while The Couch earned a spot at the event through student suggestions on campus. Jillian Vidal, Pride and Traditions coordinator for SACA, said the headline act was chosen as a balance taking into account student surveys ranking hip hop at the top, with rock music coming in second.

"This year we really wanted to focus on the music aspect of the event. After looking at bands within our budget we came across Shwayze whose music combines hip hop and rock," Vidal Said. "His rapping with the singing of Cisco Adler makes a mellow, but funky type of music that is perfect for finding a compromise between what students want to hear."

Along with the musical acts, this year's event will also include a mechanical bull and free giveaways. With the help from corporate and local sponsors, Vidal said, they hope to have vendor booths present as well.

"We are working with Chipotle to provide free tacos and SACA will also be purchasing Riverfest shirts, glow sticks, sunglasses and other giveaways to throw out to the crowd during the event," Vidal said. "We hope to have multiple vendors there like Chipotle that are willing to give free food or giveaways to the students, but we are still in the process of meeting with them."

Traditionally, Riverfest has been a popular event with students and the San Marcos community alike. Vidal said SACA will continue working up to a week prior to the event to get the word out.

"Our goal for this year's Riverfest was to really get students excited," he said. "We will be in the quad the week prior to and the week of Riverfest giving out free stuff as well as promoting the event."
