The Latino Student Association at Texas State University-San Marcos will host a celebration to remember the legacy of Cesar E. Chavez, the founder of the United Farm Worker union, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31 in the LBJ Student Center Room 3-15.1.

This event will highlight triumphs of Chavez during his work with the UFW and his advocacy for the civil liberties of one of the most marginalized populations in the nation – farm workers. This event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP to LSA.txstate@gmail.com.

“It’s a great way to acknowledge the potential one person can have when it comes to fighting for what you believe in,” said Abigail Moreno, LSA member and one of the event organizers. “Cesar Chavez is a great example.”

A catered dinner will be served followed by a keynote speaker, E. Roberta (Bobbi) Ryder, president and CEO of the National Center for Farmworker Health (NCFH).

Ryder has many years of personal involvement with migrant families through community advocacy and professional migrant health program experience. She is the former executive director of the Migrant and Rural Community Health Association (MARCHA) in Bangor, Mich. Ryder holds a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in Latin American studies and child psychology. She has also completed fellowships at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
