Texas State competing in national RecycleMania

Texas State University-San Marcos students, faculty and staff will once again participate in the National Recycling Coalition’s RecycleMania competition. Texas State will join more than 500 colleges in the 10-week contest that takes place Jan. 17-March 27. 

Participating schools turn in weekly results to the RecycleMania website in hopes of being crowned champion.

The National Recycling Coalition reports that the contest collected 69.4 million pounds of recyclable material during the 2009 competition.

The contest began in 2001 as a friendly competition between two school recycling coordinators in Ohio. Since its inception, the number of participating schools has almost doubled each year and currently has 598 schools registered for the 2010 competition, according to the National Recycling Coalition.

Texas State will submit a weight for paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminum, glass and food service organics during this year’s contest. There are outdoor receptacles for plastic bottles and aluminum cans located throughout the campus. There are also a number of indoor receptacles for plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper.

The campus recycling center currently accepts a wide variety of recyclable materials including textbooks. A complete list of accepted materials can be found on their website at http://recycling.facilities.txstate.edu/.
