Craig Hanks honored as Distinguished Teaching Professor

J. Craig Hanks, an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at Texas State University-San Marcos, has been honored as the next Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities for 2009-2011.
 
This three-year professorship, supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, offers the opportunity for its holder to engage in projects that promote the humanities at Texas State and surrounding communities.
 
Over the next three years, Hanks will implement a project related to technology and values, which includes the development of special topics and honors classes, faculty seminars, and other events including films, exhibitions and performances. The project will use the humanities examine the role and force of technology and technological change, exploring varied—and sometimes conflicting—views and ultimately fostering dialogue to help bridge the different views. The goal is to gain insights into how technology influences society’s values and how those values, in turn, shape technology.
 
Hanks earned his B.A. in philosophy from Texas A&M University in 1983 and his Ph.D. in philosophy from Duke University in 1991. He joined the Texas State faculty in 2000, and since that time, he has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching and Honors Professor of the Year, among other teaching awards.
