The Texas State University-San Marcos Department of Theatre and Dance will offer students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and knowledge of the film industry June 21-26.
Film 1o1 will be a five-day residential workshop taught by film industry professionals to involve students directly in the filmmaking process, while learning the importance of story, organization, legal matters and the high-stress environment of real-life production. Unlike other day camp workshops, Film 1o1 participants will work 12-hour days (a standard in the business) and experience all aspects of filmmaking from development to postproduction.
Working alongside industry professionals, participants will use professional motion picture equipment, cameras and editing systems. During the workshop, a short film will be prepped, cast, rehearsed and shot. Participants can expect to gain hands-on knowledge about the film industry, how it works and the proper path to achieving paid employment in the field.
The workshop will be led by Texas State alumnus and long-time director of the Texas Film Commission Tom Copeland. Since retiring from the commission in 2005, Copeland has been teaching film classes at the Texas State Department of Theatre and Dance, which include “the business of film” and “short film development.” His contribution to the department also includes working to place Texas State students in internships and entry-level positions in the entertainment industry in Texas and Los Angeles.
Furthermore, Film 1o1 founder and award-winning filmmaker Chris Caddel will join as an instructor for the workshop. Caddel, now of the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center in Lubbock, has a 20-year background in filmmaking, and has worked as a director, editor, director of photography and art director in the industry.
Film 1o1 is sponsored by the Texas State University Department of Theatre and Dance in conjunction with the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts.
