Texas State University-San Marcos Associate Provost Gene Bourgeois has been presented with the Texas Academic Advising Network (TEXAAN) award for Outstanding Academic Advising Administrator for 2009.
Selected for the award due to his efforts to advance academic advising at Texas State, Bourgeois has worked to coordinate advising efforts by effectively managing operating budgets and adding new advisors. He worked in 2007 and 2008 to see that all advising centers received more staff advisor lines to meet increasing needs. Because of his efforts working with college deans, the advising center supervisors and the human resources office, 25 additional academic advisors were hired.
Bourgeois's leadership qualities and tireless work have earned him the respect of his colleagues and co-workers alike.
“Since becoming associate provost four years ago, he naturally assumed the responsibility for supporting and coordinating the efforts to provide more staff for undergraduate advising at Texas State,” said Ron Brown, dean of the University College, in a letter of support. “He has spent his entire administrative career concerned with improving advising and recognizing it as a central feature of the institutional support for student success.”
TEXAAN, the state recognized organization for academic advising, recognized Bourgeois at a conference that took place Feb. 18-20, and was attended by more than 300 academic advisors representing over 40 colleges and universities throughout Texas.
