Texas State hosts symposium with filmmaker CC Stinson

Texas State University-SanMarcos will host a symposium titled “Boundaries of Beauty” featuring director/producer CC Stinson and her film “Light, Bright, Damn Near White” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 in the LBJ Student Center Teaching Theater on campus.

This celebration of Women’s History Month will follow with a female faculty panel discussion from 6:30-7:30 and a question and answer session with Stinson in room 3-15.1 of the student center.

Colorism is a form of discrimination based on skin tone and affects the daily lives of people of color across all socioeconomic boundaries and backgrounds. Stinson’s documentary, “Light, Bright, Damn Near White,” focuses on issues of colorism in the African American, Latino, Indian and Middle Eastern communities.

“Those practicing color bias do not recognize this as a form of discrimination and it often goes on without discussion, protest or opposition. This was my inspiration in creating the documentary,” explains Stinson.    

The purpose of the symposium will bring women and experts in the field together to openly discuss this taboo subject of beauty using Stinson’s film and other educational materials.

Stinson grew up in Baltimore, Md., attended high school in Germany and obtained her masters in information systems from Tarleton State University. In 2005, she left her corporate career to fully focus on producing, writing, acting and directing. Her short films include her directorial debut “Breakdown,” which was selected to air on BETJ Shorts Showcase, and her award-winning children’s film “Hot Summer Daze.” She has completed a full-length feature tribute documentary to her late father and is currently in postproduction on “Light, Bright, Damn Near White.”
