Health Center receives perfect accreditation score

The Texas State University-San Marcos Student Health Center (SHC) has received official notification that the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) has renewed its accreditation for the maximum three-year term.

The Student Health Center received a perfect score on the accreditation survey with all standards reviewed found to be in “substantial compliance.” The SHC has been accredited since 2003.

Status as an accredited organization means the SHC has passed a series of rigorous and nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality health care as determined by the AAAHC (www.aaahc.org/eweb/StartPage.aspx). More than 3,800 ambulatory health care organizations across the United States are accredited by the AAAHC. Texas State is one of only seven universities in the state that have an AAAHC accredited student health center.

Ambulatory health care organizations seeking accreditation by the AAAHC undergo an extensive on-site, peer-based survey of their facilities and services. Accreditation requires a commitment to high standards of health care and not all ambulatory health care organizations that undergo the on-site survey are granted accreditation.

The Texas State SHC has provided healthcare services to students for almost 60 years. With over 53,000 patient contacts last year, the SHC is a busy service and used by half of all the students enrolled in the university. The SHC provides primary care, women’s and mental health services. 

Support services include an on-site CLIA certified laboratory, state-of-the-art digital radiology, and express-fill pharmacy.   Specialty services are available by referral through contracts with a preferred provider network. A Health Education Resource Center provides health education and wellness services to the campus community.
