The Texas State University-San Marcos Career Services Department is encouraging all students from all majors and experience levels to take part in a series of events making February Career Month.
Jonathan Pliego, career adviser, said that the variety of events hosted by the department are all organized to build upon each other to prepare students for the variety of career fairs, training participants to best utilize these events for professional networking and ultimately land a good job after graduation.
"These events are really open to all majors," Pliego said. "For example, just because you're not majoring in a field specifically focused on the construction industry doesn't mean you can't find good opportunities at the construction job fair."
One example will be the Speed Interviewing Extravaganza, to be held Thursday, Feb. 12, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the LBJ Student Center Ballroom. The idea behind the event plays loosely off the concept of "speed dating." Speed interviewing operates by lining a number of employers up in booths. Interviewees will have a brief amount of time with an employer before being directed to the next. As they go, students will get tips on attire, interviewing techniques and resume critiques.
Pliego said that with the national economy currently underperforming, it's all the more important for potential job seekers to start networking even if they don't plan on graduating until a few years down the road. He said that even though a lot of companies aren't hiring like they maybe were before the current economic slump, opportunities are still out there and employers trust Texas State as a source for qualified, well-trained candidates. Career month events along with upcoming career fairs are designed to maximize student skills at obtaining meaningful employment.
