LBJ daughters to deliver lecture named for their father

President Lyndon Johnson’s daughters Lynda Johnson Robb and Luci Baines Johnson will give the lecture named in honor of their father at Texas State University-San Marcos on Tuesday, April 14, at 5:30 p.m. in Evans Auditorium.

Former LBJ speechwriters Harry Middleton, founding director of the LBJ Library and Museum, and Robert Hardesty, president emeritus of Texas State, will moderate the event.

The lecture had originally been scheduled for April 7.

The Lyndon Baines Johnson Distinguished Lecture will be the culminating event of a year of celebration of the 100^th anniversary of the birth of Johnson, a 1930 graduate of the university. The academic year’s seminars, debates, speakers, performing arts and exhibitions have focused on the Common Experience theme, “Civic Responsibility and the Legacy of LBJ.” The university joined several other entities, including the presidential library and the LBJ state and national parks, in celebration of the Johnson centennial.

The lecture series began in 1982 as the fulfillment of a promise made on campus by Johnson in 1973, days before he died. Johnson envisioned a lecture series that would bring to his alma mater some of the finest minds in the country. Past lecturers include Barbara Jordan, Gerald Ford, James Farmer, Helen Thomas, Jim Lehrer, Jack Valenti, Maya Angelou, Liz Carpenter, Parker J. Palmer, Morris Dees and Harry Middleton.

Admission to the public lecture is free.

The event will be preceded by an admissions fair particularly designed for students from San Marcos High School, Austin Community College and San Antonio community colleges from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
