Student published in international academic journal

Texas State University-San Marcos student Martha Bitar recently published an article in the International Journal of Language Society and Culture.

Originally from Torreon, Mexico, Bitar collected her research while in Guatemala this summer as part of an independent study with Texas State’s honors program. Bitar is a junior studying international relations and economics.

“I am so excited to have this opportunity, and especially to share my experiences with others,” said Bitar.

She conducted extensive interviews with members of a Mayan community, hoping to be able to better understand and explain the language patterns used by the people.

Bitar was supervised by Texas State professors Ana Juarez and Charise Pimentel. Juarez, who teaches anthropology, received a grant from National Science Foundation, which provided support for the research.

“Martha Bitar takes the initiative to find unusual opportunities to deepen and expand her education,” said Diann McCabe, associate director, University Honors program.

“Her honors independent study work with Drs. Juarez and Pimentel last summer is an example of such initiative, involving travel to live in another culture, producing research worthy of publication.”

During her time at Texas State Bitar has also studied in Dubai and worked with fellow members of the organization STAND to raise awareness of the ongoing violence in Darfur.

“I would encourage any student that is considering a master's degree or a career in academia to get involved in research and publish. It is a great way to increase competitiveness in graduate school,” said Bitar.
