Cancer events focus on remembrance, education, action

A collaboration of Texas State University-San Marcos, the American Cancer Society, the National Bone Marrow Registry and the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center will hold five hope-themed cancer events throughout this month, beginning with a cancer survivors panel session at 5:30 p.m., April 9, in the LBJ Student Center Teaching Theater on the Texas State Campus.

Parking is available in the adjacent parking garage.  All the events are free to the public.

These cancer events will remember loved ones who have passed away because of cancer, educate those in attendance about different types of cancer (breast, ovarian, leukemia, lymphoma, pancreatic, liver and others) and about the new cutting-edge advances in cancer care and cures. The events will call for people to “fight back” through helping in a variety of ways those who are afflicted with these dreaded diseases.

• April 9, 5:30 p.m.: “Cancer: Shared Experiences,” Texas State Cancer Survivors Panel, public presentation, LBJ Student Center Teaching Theater.
   
• April 9, 7 p.m.: Bone Marrow Swab Training Session, LBJ Student Center Teaching Theater, pizza provided for participants
   
• April 11, 7 p.m.: Relay for Life: Support for Survivors and Research, Bobcat Stadium.
   
• April 22, 5:30 p.m.: Dr. Marcos de Lima, internationally acclaimed bone marrow transplant expert from M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, public presentation, “One Life at a Time: Putting Your Spare Stem Cells to Work,” Alkek Teaching Theater
   
• April 22-24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.: Texas State Bone Marrow Donor Drive, donor tables at various locations on campus
