Documentary filmmaker, photojournalist headline Spring Symposium

Documentary filmmaker Gary A. “Rusty” Fleming, Jr., and photojournalist Lisa Krantz headline the Texas State University-San Marcos School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s 3rd Annual Spring Symposium March 27.

The symposium will be held in Old Main, room 320 on the Texas State campus. Fleming will speak at 10:30 a.m. with Krantz speaking at 1:30 p.m.

Fleming, from Renavatio Productions, has traveled along the U.S.-Mexican border for more than three years, investigating the drug cartels. In his most recent documentary film, “Drug Wars: The Columbianization of Mexico,” he exposes the real truth behind the headlines. From the viewpoint of the players and the victims; this situation gets exposed in graphic detail with never-before-seen footage of the most powerful terrorists on earth.

Krantz is a multiple-award winning staff photographer at the San Antonio Express-News in San Antonio. She joined the staff in March 2004 after spending five years as a staff photographer at the Naples Daily News in Naples, Fla. She attended Florida State University where she received a degree in psychology and earned her graduate degree in photography from Syracuse University. She interned at The Post-Standard (Syracuse, New York), The Albuquerque Journal and The Indianapolis Star.

As part of this yearly event, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication will bring to Texas State more than 40 high school students from John Jay High School in San Antonio. The students will listen to the symposium speakers and get a taste of the Texas State campus.
