Texas State rugby team wins state championship

The men’s rugby team at Texas State University-San Marcos captured the Division 2 State Championship at the Texas Rugby Union Championships held March 1-2 in San Marcos.
The Texas State Renegades dominated the competition Saturday and Sunday with a victory over University of North Texas 55-12 in the semi-final and over University of Dallas 57-3 in the final.
The two-day final four consisted of the top men’s competition in the state including University of Dallas, North Texas and San Angelo State.
The rugby team is a Sport Club affiliated with the Campus Recreation department at Texas State. It has been representing the university in intercollegiate rugby competitions since the late 1970s with the last state championship in 1987. The team practices and competes at the West Campus Fields.
