University observes Brain Injury Awareness Month

Texas State University-San Marcos will observe Brain Injury Awareness Month with the BobCat Heads-Up Campaign presentation slated for March 20, at 11 a.m. in the LBJ Student Center room 3-3.1.

The purpose of the event is to increase awareness and provide increased support to students who have suffered mild head injuries or concussions.

The presentation will include information and activities sponsored by the Dana Foundation, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Brain Injury Association of America.

Denise Gobert, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, said active 15-24 year olds are at the highest risk for obtaining mild head injuries.

“With the presentation we hope to increase awareness of the symptoms experienced by adults with mild head injuries,” Gobert said. “We want to encourage students to seek help if they feel it is necessary.”

The Center for Disease Control said symptoms of mild head injuries could include dizziness, difficulty with sleep and an inability to concentrate. Gobert says these injuries have the ability to disrupt everyday life.

The student health center, the counseling center, the office for disability services and the recreation center will also be combining efforts to increase awareness in their departments.
