Roxanne Moralez, a first generation college student attending Texas State University-San Marcos, was recently elected for a two-year term to the National Collegiate Honors Council board of directors as a student representative.
As a member of the board, Moralez will help the NCHC advance undergraduate education through proposals made by honors students and professionals on the committee.
The senior accounting major from Edinburg is also very involved with campus life.
As a former student manager in the Mitte Honors Program and in helping incoming freshmen acclimate to campus through a current student manager position with PAWS Preview, Moralez says she's learned the importance of working on a team.
“I describe myself as a lone ranger--quiet and timid,” Moralez said. “Opening up in organizations has helped me learn to lead and follow, and when it’s best to do one over the other.”
Moralez helped draft a previous proposal to the NCHC suggesting changes to the way university seminar classes are taught at Texas State.
“I’ve got a lot of ideas for them… but first I want to get familiar with my responsibilities,” Moralez said.
She will begin her term at the next NCHC meeting Feb. 29 to March 1 in Washington, D.C.
Moralez is also a member of the Accounting Club, Beta Gamma Sigma business honors fraternity, the Mitte Honors Student Association and former secretary for Grupo Folklorico Ocotochtli, a Mexican folkloric dance team.
She plans to intern at the auditing firm of Deloitte & Touche and submit her honor’s thesis on women in the accounting profession next fall, and complete her master’s in accounting by 2010.
