AFS awards scholarships to seven students

The Texas chapter of the American Foundry Society presented scholarships to seven winners from Texas State University-San Marcos on Jan. 25 in Houston.

The awards were at a banquet and meeting for the state chapter, amounting to $8,250 in financial aid for students and strengthening a long-term and beneficial relationship between the society and the university.

“Besides the financial support, the AFS gives us a way to connect the best companies in the industry with the best students,” said Bob Habingreither, associate dean of the College of Science.

Habingreither said the AFS has contributed more than $1 million into building the program at Texas State through the last 20 years. He cited scholarships awards and improvements to lab space, equipment, instruments, supplies and cast metals technology.

“We have had outstanding political support from the AFS and the Texas chapter,” Habingreither said. “They were the ones who originally planted the seed for the future of our program.”

Scholarship recipients include Adam Davidson, a manufacturing engineering senior from Houston, Michael Delashmut, an industrial technology-manufacturing senior from San Antonio, John Court Naylor, an engineering technology senior from Three Rivers, Derek Schneider, an engineering technology senior from Victoria, Kelly Stechschulte, an engineering technology senior from Wauseon, Ohio, Nathan Thormeyer, a manufacturing engineering senior from San Marcos, and Josh Warrick, a manufacturing technology senior from Sour Lake. 

Texas State will host the next meeting of the AFS Texas chapter Feb. 29.
