A memorial service for Jeffrey A. Slomka, assistant professor of computer science at Texas State, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the Porter-Loring North Funeral Chapel, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, in San Antonio.

Slomka passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the age of 56.

He joined the Texas State faculty in 1985 and was tenured in 1992. A valued teacher and colleague, Slomka was a three-time recipient of the Computer Science Alpha Chi National Honor Society’s “Favorite Teacher” award.

Hector Flores, Dean of the College of Science at Texas State, said, “This is a very sad day for Computer Science and the College of Science.”

Texas State Computer Science Department Chair Hongchi Shi described Slomka as “a dedicated professor who cared about his students and the future of the department.”

In addition to his teaching duties, Slomka was a teacher education adviser and an undergraduate student adviser for the department.

He was one of the principal investigators for the National Science Foundation-funded La Costa grant, a three-year informal IT education program that addressed the technical, social and economic needs of students in five South Texas high schools.

He held a bachelor of arts degree from the University of California at San Diego, a master of science from the University of Kentucky and a master of science from Texas State.

The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Jeffrey A. Slomka Memorial Scholarship Fund at Texas State.

Checks should be made payable to Texas State University-San Marcos, with the notation to the Jeffrey Slomka Memorial Fund. They may be mailed to: Texas State University-San Marcos, Attn: Advancement Services, 601 University Drive, San Marcos, TX, 78666.
