Health educator, author Scott Fried to speak on AIDS

Health educator and author Scott Fried will deliver his lecture “AIDS, Love and the Secret Lives of College Students” at Texas State University-San Marcos on Oct. 2 and 3 at 3 p.m. at the LBJ Student Center room 3-14.1

Fried is a native New Yorker who has dedicated the last 16 years of his life lecturing in nearly every state in the country, as well as internationally, spreading the word that AIDS is more than just a disease.

“The presentation will connect with feelings of isolation and separateness,” Fried said. “I will share the story of my own risk behavior, and how this journey has led me to share in the lives of more than a million others as they try to make peace with life’s demanding circumstances.”

Fried was infected with HIV at the age of 24 and said he wants to deliver a message of hope.

“I encourage everyone to attend, especially those who think HIV could never happened to them,” Fried said. “It happened to me and it could happen to anyone.”

Fried has spoken at over 500 institutions, including colleges and universities, high schools and middle schools, summer camps, synagogues and churches.

“I want people to leave the lecture with a sense of awareness that HIV happens to college students, and that it’s important to protect themselves,” Fried said. “It’s important for people to remember that safer sex is also about emotional safety not just physical safety.”
