Work will begin this summer on a 94,000 square-foot expansion of the Student Recreation Center at Texas State University-San Marcos.
The Texas State University System Board of Regents Friday (May 18) authorized the university to spend approximately $31 million for the construction project, which will begin in June and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2008.
The expanded center will include an eight-lane lap pool and a leisure pool, a rock climbing facility, increased space for the weight room and cardiovascular areas to address overcrowding, additional basketball and volleyball courts and an indoor soccer court, a golf simulator, a computer lab and a snack bar and lounge area.
The Student Recreation Center expansion is included in the campus master plan adopted by the Board of Regents in May 2005. Preliminary plans prepared by Marmon Mok Architects were approved by the board in May 2006. Construction will be under the supervision of Bartlett-Cocke.
The project will be funded by Texas State University System revenue financing bonds and Higher Education Assistance Funds. The bonds will be repaid through an increase in the Student Recreation Fee, approved by a student vote in the spring of 2005.
