Texas State hosting wheelchair rugby tournament
Date of Release: 10/10/2006
SAN MARCOS —The Department of Recreation at Texas State University-San Marcos is sponsoring the Texas Wheelchair Rugby Round-up tournament Saturday, Oct. 14 from 11a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 15 from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
The event will be held at the Student Recreational Center on campus. The cost to attend is $1 for students with ID and $3 for the general public.
The tournament invites paralympic rugby players from Texas and everyone is invited to marvel at the intense skills involved and enjoy the fierce competition. Paralympic means any individual with physical disabilities, including mobility disabilities, amputees, visual disabilities and those with cerebral palsy that want to engage in sports.
Therapeutic recreation is an established part of comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. Recreational therapy uses a variety of interventions to treat physical, social, cognitive and emotional conditions associated with illness, injury or chronic disability.
Therapy programs include an educational component that enables individuals to become more informed and active partners in their own health care by using activities to cope with the stress of illness and disability.
These services assist individuals with managing their disabilities so they may achieve and maintain optimal levels of independence, productivity and well being in order to enter or re-enter the mainstream of community life.
Research evidence indicates that therapeutic recreation prevents secondary disability and contributes to overall health and well being by raising the level of life quality experienced by those receiving these services.
