Zachary Moore selected as 2006-07 Grosvenor Scholar

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Zachary A. Moore, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Geography at Texas State University-San Marcos, has been selected to serve as the 2006-07 Grosvenor Scholar.
Moore, a native of Allen, will assume his role as Grosvenor Scholar in August, succeeding 2005-06 Grosvenor Scholar Jamie Zech, a third-year doctoral student in environmental geography. David Rutherford, who recently graduated with a doctoral degree in geographic education from Texas State, served as the first Grosvenor Scholar in 2004-05.
Moore earned a bachelor of science in geography from Eastern Illinois University, with concentrations in general geography, environmental studies and geographic techniques/spatial studies in 2002. He enrolled in Western Illinois University, earning a master of arts degree in geography in 2004, with concentrations in urban and regional planning and social justice issues pertaining to educational inequalities. Moore also served an internship with the National Geographic Society (NGS), working on a project examining the status of geography in K-12 education with the Education Foundation and the Geography National Implementation Project. As a doctoral student, Moore's research interests include geographic education in K-12 and higher education, social justice issues related to educational inequalities, education policy, and historical geography.
The Grosvenor Scholar Program, developed as a partnership between Texas State, the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation and the NGS, provides a one-year residency at NGS headquarters in Washington, D.C. for a Texas State doctoral student in geographic education. The Grosvenor Scholar participates in various aspects of the geographic education mission of the Society, assisting NGS Education Foundation personnel with their public advocacy campaign, model programs grant making, and their newly launched public engagement initiative.
