Hispanic Policy Network awards scholarships

SAN MARCOS—The Hispanic Policy Network (HPN) at Texas State University-San Marcos has named Cecilia Hernandez and Dora Ramirez as recipients of the 2006 HPN Scholarship Award.
Hernandez, daughter of Miguel Hernandez, is a San Marcos High School senior. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Diamond Line Dance Team, HOSA, Youth LULAC, Student Council and Rural Talent Search. Hernandez plans to attend Texas State this fall and major in education to reach her goal of becoming a kindergarten teacher. Her father is currently employed as a head A/C mechanic in the Facilities Department.
Ramirez, daughter of Dominga Wesley, is a sophomore at Texas State and is a 2004 San Marcos High School graduate. She is an accounting major, with a minor in Spanish, and is a Student Support Services participant. Ramirez’s mother is currently employed as a custodian in Residence Life.
The Hispanic Policy Network is a group of Hispanic faculty and staff committed to the improvement of higher education opportunities for Hispanics. HPN functions as an educational advocate, a vehicle for networking and a resource for the recruitment and retention of Hispanics. The HPN membership has raised funds to establish an HPN scholarship as a way of supporting their role as higher education advocates. Each recipient will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship for the Fall 2006 semester to assist with tuition and/or room and board expenses.
