Johnny Gimble headlines Stars of Texas Music Legacy Series

Date of release: 10/19/05

SAN MARCOS—Johnny Gimble and the South Austin Jug Band will headline the 2nd Annual Stars of Texas Music Legacy concert Oct. 25 at Texas State University-San Marcos.

The performance will begin at 8 p.m. in the outdoor Glade Theatre. The concert is free and open to the general public. In case of rain, the alternate site will be Evans Auditorium.

Presented by the Department of Fine Arts and Communication and the Center for Texas Music History, the Stars of Texas Music Legacy Series showcases a young musical group who reflects the influence of a legendary Texas musician. The 2005 concert shines the spotlight on Johnny Gimble, an influential fiddler whose career spans more than six decades. In addition to his own band, he has played with Bob Wills, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, to name a few. A giant in the field, Gimble has been pivotal in creating the Texas Swing sound.

Opening the show will be the South Austin Just Band, a popular local group featuring two fiddlers, both of whom are indebted to Gimble’s legacy. Both innovative in their combining of genres and true to the traditions of their musical roots, the South Austin Jug Band has established itself as a tour-de-force in the world of acoustic music.

A special appearance by Johnny Cuviello, who played drums with Bob Wills and Buck Owens, rounds out the event. His “Texas Drummer Boy” was a hit for Wills in 1947, and at 90 years old, Cuviello still pounds the skins like a teenager.
