Texas State unveils “Dive Into Science” program
SAN MARCOS—“Dive Into Science,” a new program developed by the College of Science at Texas State University-San Marcos to engage 5th-8th grade science teachers in novel ways of learning and teaching science, will make its debut Sept. 17.
Program participants will meet at The Dive Shop (1911 Ranch Road 12) from 10 a.m.-noon before moving to Spring Lake at Aquarena Center from 1-3 p.m.
Developed with a $300,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating board, “Dive Into Science” is designed to improve teacher quality in the state of Texas. The program is unique in that it combines real life adventures (Discover Scuba Diving) with actual underwater science experiments and data analysis.
Collaborating with The Dive Shop, the largest college scuba program in the U.S. and an established presence at Texas State since 1972, and SciEd System, a science education training collaborative, has enabled Texas State to offer the program to more than 40 teachers from Pharr San Juan Alamo in the Rio Grande valley to Megargle in the Texas Panhandle.
