Texas State hosts Black and Latino Playwrights Conference

SAN MARCOS—The Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State University-San Marcos will play host to the Texas State Black and Latino Playwrights Conference Sept. 23-24.

The weekend conference will feature staged readings of two new plays in the Studio Theatre of the Texas State Theatre Center on campus. Admission is $3.  

After nationwide submissions, Artistic Director  Eugene Lee and Associate Artistic Director  Luis Munoz  have selected Forty Acres by Robert Alexander and 69 Portraits of Che by Joe Luis Cedillo as the two new scripts to workshop. The plays are rehearsed with the playwrights in residence, culminating in the staged-readings.

Forty Acres is a compelling, thought-provoking drama that debates whether or not reparations should be paid to African Americans who are descendants of slaves. The cast includes Broadway actors Eugene Lee and Anthony Chisholm.

69 Portraits of Che is a poetic, episodic drama about generations of women in a Latina family and the consequences of their choices in love. Using storytelling and myths, it explores how people cope with change.

Forty Acres, directed by Stephen Gerald, will be presented Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.

69 Portraits of Che, directed by Luis Munoz, will be presented Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.
