Texas State Bands launch “Visiting Artist Series”

SAN MARCOS — Jack Stamp, DMA, Director of Band Studies and Assistant Chair of the Department of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, will be the inaugural guest of the new ?Visiting Artist Series? concert March 31 at Texas State University-San Marcos.
The program, sponsored by the Texas State Bands, will feature Stamp in a joint concert of the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds at 8 p.m. in Evans Auditorium.
Stamp is founder and conductor of the Keystone Wind Ensemble, a professional wind band that has released several recordings on the Citadel label. His primary composition teachers were Robert Washburn and Fisher Tull, although he has studied more recently with noted American composers David Diamond, Joan Tower and Richard Danielpour.
During his time on the Texas State campus, Stamp will address music education classes and will rehearse both ensembles prior to the Thursday evening concert, which will showcase Stamp conducting several of his own compositions. The evening will also feature euphonium soloist Freddie Mendoza, director of Jazz Studies at Texas State. Anyone wishing to participate in a ?Meet the Composer? session, scheduled for 7 p.m., should RSVP to the Ensembles Office at (512) 245-3399.
Other Concert Events
The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds will give separate concerts to conclude the semester on April 21 and April 26, respectively. Both concerts are at 8 p.m. in Evans Auditorium.
The Concert Band, the lab ensemble of the Texas State School of Music, will give concerts 8 p.m. April 28 and 6:30 p.m. April 29 featuring numerous student conductors.
Admission for all concerts is $2 for the general public, $1 for students. Tickets are available at the door.
