Roosters production celebrates border culture

SAN MARCOS —The Texas State University-San Marcos Department of Theatre and Dance presents Roosters by Milcha Sanchez-Scott 7:30 p.m. March 30 and April 1-2 at the University Performing Arts and Conference Center.
Directed by Chris Navarro, the play follows the story of Gallo Morales, who raised the finest fighting roosters in the Southwest until his ambitions and his shadows sent him to prison for seven years. Today he returns home to his prized rooster, Zapata, and to his family: his long-suffering wife, Juana, who remains ever hopeful that Gallo is a truly good man; his son, Hector, who hates and loves his father with terrible passion; and his daughter, Angela, who speaks to angels and saints and sees Gallo’s shadows. Meanwhile Gallo’s sister, Chata, has also come to the Morales’ family to take what she needs and give what she can. Can she protect the family from her brother’s violent blood? Roosters is a celebration and exploration of the light and dark forces of the culture and people of the U.S./Mexico border.
