Noted researcher to hold Mitte Chair in education at Texas State

SAN MARCOS — Renowned educational researcher John Smyth has been named to hold the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Chair in School Improvement in the College of Education at Texas State University-San Marcos.

Smyth has served as Foundation Professor of Teacher Education at Flinders University in Australia and as director of the Flinders Institute for the Study of Teaching. He has held distinguished visiting fellowships at universities in Canada, has been a senior Fulbright research scholar and a recipient of the Palmer O. Johnson Award for Outstanding Research from the American Educational Research Association.

Smyth is the author or editor of 14 scholarly books, 45 book chapters and 82 papers in refereed journals. He is on the editorial boards of six international journals on education.

Smyth's areas of research interest include socio-cultural analyses of education and the sociology and politics of teachers work.

Five Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Endowed Chairs were established at Texas State in 1997 through a $5 million gift from the Mitte Foundation. Chairs were established in cancer research, creative writing, entrepreneurship studies, school improvement and semiconductor manufacturing and research.
