Mathworks students named Siemens-Westinghouse semifinalists
SAN MARCOS – Eleven high school students from the Honors Summer Math Camp (HSMC) at Texas State University-San Marcos have been named semifinalists in the 2004 Siemens-Westinghouse Science, Math and Technology Competition.
The students worked in teams on original research projects during the summer with a faculty mentor from the Department of Mathematics. Students and mentors are:
- Jonathan Einev (Austin, LBJ Science Academy), Erica Rew (San Antonio, Texas Academy of Math and Science in Denton), Eric Feng (Plano East HS) working with Professor Eugene Curtin.
- Jennifer Schmerling (Austin, LBJ Science Academy), Edward Schmerling (Austin, LBJ Science Academy), Sarah Spikes (Seymour HS) working with Professor Daniela Ferrero.
- Joshua Lim (Arlington, The Oakridge School), Jeff Nanney (Plano East HS), and Kris Kazlowski (Arlington, The Oakridge School) working with Professor Jian Shen.
- Helen Zhang (Austin, LBJ Science Academy) and Elsyia Sheu (Missouri City, Elkins HS), working with Professor Susan Morey.
The HSMC is a six-week residential program in mathematics whose goal is to develop talented students in mathematics. The HSMC is part of Texas Mathworks, which also sponsors Junior Summer Math Camps for younger students. Mathworks’ goal is to prepare all students to do higher level math and science.
Support for the program has been provided by the American Math Society Epsilon Fund, National Science Foundation, Siemens Foundation, Kodosky Foundation, Educational Advancement Foundation and others. Over the past four years, 35 HSMC students have been named as semi-finalists, and two teams (six students) have continued on to become national finalists (top six in the country).
