In The Learned Ladies, Moliere takes aim at the intellectual and artistic pretentiousness of Parisian salon society. Written in 1672, the play centers around a well-to-do family whose household is thrown into comic upheaval when an imposter enters their lives. Eccentric characters, hilarious dialogue and fast-paced action make this one of Moliere's comic masterpieces. Director Michael Costello (Death of a Salesman, Chicago) updates the production to 1930s Paris, an era of radical artistic experimentation. He affectionately refers to the play as "The Marx Brothers in Dada-land," since the production spoofs the artistic and literary avant-garde movements of the period. Media coverage of this project is invited, and press passes are available. For further information, contact the Texas State Box Office at (512) 245-2204. |
