Seminar marks 9/11 impact on San Marcos

SAN MARCOS – A seminar asking the poignant question “How Has 9/11 Affected San Marcos” will be held 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 in the LBJ Student Center Teaching Theater at Texas State University-San Marcos..  

Prior to the panel discussion, the crucial work of area police, firefighters and EMS responders will be recognized and they will be thanked for their public service. Afterwards, a brief candlelight remembrance will immediately follow the panel session and will be held on the south side of the student center near the water fountain.

Panelists participating in the discussion will include San Marcos Mayor Susan Narviaz, City Manager Dan O’Leary, Police Chief Howard Williams, Fire Chief Mike Baker, EMS Director Tom Partin, Texas State Police Chief Ralph Meyer and Steve Griffith, director of the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center. The San Marcos leaders will provide their insights about how the horror of September 11, 2001 has affected San Marcos, particularly regarding the community’s protective and emergency plans and the training that has been undertaken to this time. After the panelists have given their perspectives, then the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions about these serious issues.

The event, sponsored by the Texas State Geography Department, is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the parking garage on the north side of the LBJ Student Center. When entering the building from the parking garage, the Teaching Theater is up the stairs on the right of the fourth floor, Room 4-16.1.
