MAES hosts 10th Annual Science Extravaganza
SAN MARCOS – The Texas State University-San Marcos chapter of the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists will host the 10th Annual Science Extravaganza March 6 with more than 400 area school children expected to attend.
The Science Extravaganza will begin with 9 a.m. opening ceremonies in the LBJ Student Center Teaching Theater before moving to the Mitte Complex and Supple Science Building for workshops and other ongoing projects.
In recognition of the Science Extravaganza’s 10-year anniversary, San Marcos Mayor Robbert Habingreither has declared the week of March 6 as “Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists Week.”
The Science Extravaganza is a full day event of hands-on interactive engineering and science presentations designed to give students a unique opportunity to learn about various fields in a fun and educational environment. Equally important, the extravaganza gives an ethnically diverse group of students an opportunity to visit a university campus and meet college students and professionals with similar backgrounds. The event has created a collaborative partnership between academia, government and industry sponsors that share an interest in the education and development of our future leaders.
The Texas State MAES student chapter established the Science Extravaganza (then known as the MAES Science Circus) in 1994 to promote the fields of biology and physics to students from San Marcos High School. This year, fifth and sixth grade students from Maria Hernandez Intermediate School and San Marcos Preparatory School will be in attendance as various student organizations from Texas State and across Texas present the hands-on workshops, along with professional MAES members from Austin. Additionally, MAES national board members will be visiting the Science Extravaganza during the day’s activities.
