Texas State names Moore provost, vice president for academic affairs

SAN MARCOS – Perry D. Moore has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas State University-San Marcos.

Moore comes to Texas State from Wright State
University in Ohio, where he served as chair of the Department of Political Science, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and university provost before assuming his current position of senior vice president.

He will begin work at Texas State July 1.

“ Rarely does a university have the ability to hire a person with Dr. Moore’s experience and talents as a provost. We are indeed fortunate that he will join our great university,” said Texas State President Denise M. Trauth.

As provost at Texas State, Moore will serve as the chief academic officer of the university and will be responsible for the coordination and quality of the university’s academic and research programs.

“ I was attracted to Texas State because of the past success of the university and its future potential. I believe that Texas State has an excellent opportunity to continue to serve Texas and become a highly respected national institution,” said Moore.

Moore was one of five finalists for the provost position who visited Texas State and made presentations to the campus community in February.

“ I am honored and very happy to be the new provost at Texas State,” he said. “I am impressed with President Trauth’s vision for the university and her dynamic leadership. During my visit to San Marcos, I felt a great sense of community in the university.”

Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in history and government and a master’s degree in government from Midwestern State University and a doctorate in government from the University of Texas at Austin.

While serving as provost and senior vice president at Wright State, Moore developed and implemented campus strategic and master plans as well as enrollment, marketing and technology plans. He worked closely with the vice president for advancement to conduct a successful capital campaign and coordinated a new marketing theme, new admission and recruitment initiatives and campus beautification and renovation programs.

Moore began work at Wright State as an assistant professor of political science in 1974. He was promoted to associate professor in 1979 and full professor in 1985. He became department chair in 1979, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts in 1981 and dean of the college in 1982. He was named provost in 1998 and senior vice president in 2002.

Wright State University is located in Dayton, Ohio. It is a doctoral institution with an enrollment of 16,000 students.
