Texas State presents Woody Guthrie’s American Song

SAN MARCOS – The unique spirit and vision of one of the all-time great folk musicians comes to Texas State University-San Marcos with the musical tour-de-force Woody Guthrie’s American Song.

Produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance, Woody Guthrie’s American Song, will run on the Main Stage of the Texas State Theatre Center with 7:30 p.m. shows Feb. 10-14 and a 2 p.m. matinee Feb. 15.

A non-traditional, organic musical, Woody Guthrie’s American Song is loaded with an abundance of rich historical, social and political content. Conceived and adapted by Peter Glazer from original songs and writings of Woody Guthrie, the musical debuted in 1988 at the American Stage Festival in Milford, NH, and has since been produced in theatres around the world.

Directed by Texas State graduate student AnnMarie T. Saunders, the student cast--Matthew Harrington, Amanda Harris, Braden Williams, Blake Hamman, Jessica Woodward and Erin Polewski--change characters like hats, depicting the plight of Dust Bowl refugees and hard-pressed union workers. Onstage throughout is Hard to Make a Living, a versatile Austin-based band that gives musical life to such Guthrie classics as “So Long It’s Been Good to Know You,” “Bound for Glory,” “Deportee” and “This Land is My Land.”
