Governor’s Office honors Center for Texas Music History

Date of release: 11/07/03

SAN MARCOS —The Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University-San Marcos put a great deal of effort into the recently-published Handbook of Texas Music. Now, the Office of the Governor will honor the contributions of Texas State, its student authors and the Center on Nov. 11.

Casey Monahan of the Texas Music Office will represent the Office of the Governor at the event, to be held in the historic Brazos Building, new home of the Center for Texas Music History. Texas State President Denise Trauth will also participate in the event.

The Handbook of Texas Music serves as the definitive encyclopedia of Texas music history, and is the first publication to compile this vital and exciting information. Monahan had previously combined efforts with the Center for Texas Music History on the Texas Music Bibliography, available at http://www.governor.state.tx.us/divisions/music/education/biblio/biblio.htm/view

After culling the music entries from the Handbook of Texas Online (an earlier collaboration with the Texas State Historical Association) Monahan turned to Gary Hartman, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Texas Music History, to spearhead the augmentation of the Handbook into the exhaustive resource it is. In addition to writing entries, Hartman coordinated the efforts of Texas State students, who authored more than a hundred of the Handbook’s entries.
