Texas State to rededicate women’s exhibit

SAN MARCOS — Texas State University-San Marcos will rededicate a special exhibit devoted to the women in its history at a reception Friday, Oct. 17, as part of the university’s homecoming celebration.

The display “Southwest Texas Women: The First Hundred Years,” is now located on permanent display on the third floor of the LBJ Student Center. The reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Texas State was chartered as Southwest Texas State Normal School in 1899 and opened its doors to students in 1903. The exhibit was originally displayed on the first floor of the Albert B. Alkek Library during the university’s centennial celebration in 1999.

The exhibit is divided into four sections – “Pioneers,” “First Women,” “Women of Note” and “New Women.”

English Department Lecturer Patsy Pohl, the original designer and coordinator of the exhibit has refurbished and remounted the display.

“This exhibit does more than reflect the accomplishments of women,” she said. “It shows that a person – male or female – who graduates from this university can go anywhere and do anything.”

Pohl said rededicating the exhibit this fall is appropriate because it is the 100th anniversary of the university opening its doors to students.
