Center for Texas Music History relocates to new Brazos Building digs
SAN MARCOS – The Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University-San Marcos has relocated to the historic Brazos Hall on campus.
Situated on Edward Gary Street across from the Academic Services Building, the renovated wing in Brazos Hall offers the Center for Texas Music History permanent office space for the Center director, project administrator and work areas. It also provides conference rooms and exhibit space for materials drawn from extensive Texas Music Archives collected by the Center and administered by the Southwestern Writers Collection.
Formerly housed in the Taylor-Murphy History Building, the move puts the Center in close proximity to its on-campus partner, the Southwest Regional Humanities Center, also a tenant of Brazos Hall.
The Center for Texas Music History is the first comprehensive university-based program to focus on the entire spectrum of Texas and Southwestern music history. The Center offers a variety of projects and activities related to the preservation and study of Texas music history. These include graduate and undergraduate courses on Texas music history, publication of the Journal of Texas Music History, collections of musical archives of the Southwest and an on-line Texas music bibliography as well as collaborations with schools, museums and other entities throughout Texas to help organize educational exhibits, performances and publications celebrating the state’s rich musical heritage.
The Center recently worked with the Texas Music Office and the Texas State Historical Association to produce the Handbook of Texas Music, which is the definitive encyclopedia of Texas music history. Also, in 2002, the Center helped the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum organize a major exhibit on Texas music history.
