SWT Cheerleaders honored at Capitol
AUSTIN — The Southwest Texas State University All-Women Cheerleading Squad earned top honors Thursday in Austin, with both houses of the Texas State Legislature commending the 2003 National Champions.
State Representative Patrick Rose organized the event, introducing a resolution recognizing the SWT squad for its accomplishment in the House. State Senator Jeff Wentworth introduced a similar resolution honoring the cheerleaders in the Senate.
The Bobcats dominated the competition at the Universal Cheerleading Association’s College National Championships Jan. 10-11 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., to claim the Division I national championship. The All-Women Squad upended two-time defending champion Morehead State along with squads from Penn State, Indiana, South Florida, New Mexico, Colorado State, South Carolina and George Mason for the victory. This marks the second time the SWT cheerleaders have brought top honors home to San Marcos – they also captured the national championship in 2000.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this year’s squad,” said coach Jason Anderson.
“They had an outstanding attitude in preparing for nationals and worked very well together as a team. That's what it takes to make a champion.”
