SWT celebrates Black History Month

SAN MARCOS — The Southwest Texas State University Office of Multicultural Student Affairs along with the Multicultural Programs Committee and Black Men United are presenting three Black History Month events during February.

All events will begin at 7 p.m. and include:

February 6 Sankofa Extravaganza

“How Far Have We Come: Thousands of Miles From Nowhere”
Presentation by Dr. Kwame Alford, professor of black history,
Texas Tech University, LBJ Student Center Teaching Theater 4- 16.1

The central idea of Sankofa is “going forward while looking back” so that one never loses sight of one’s origins. This program is a three-week event focusing on correlating African culture with African-American culture. The Feb. 6 event will demonstrate similarities in music, dance and poetic interpretation as well as introduce the audience to the exotic foods of Africa and offer a brief physical and anthropological overview of the different regions of the vast continent. The Feb. 12 event will examine issues that plague both Africans and African-Americans in their respective societies.

The Feb. 26 event will feature guest speaker Dr. Kwame Alford and encompass the themes of the previous weeks and serve as an eye-opening opportunity to answer the question, “How Far Have We Come?” There will be a facilitated discussion designed to generate answers and provocative conversation.
